It was a little overcast and cool but humid this morning for the Key Biscayne Lighthouse Run. Parking and packet pickup was a breeze so all I needed to do was warmup and make sure I used the restroom after my coffee, water and Gatorade. Mission accomplished, I hung out around the starting area and set my watch. Having done no exercise all week I figured I should go out slow and run a negative split. Always a great plan; never one I achieve. At mile 1 I'm too fast, which in my lexicon is 9:30 - I know, not setting any records. By mile 2.5 I want to walk and by mile 4 I need a port a potty. Fine, I will pass on my goal to break 1 hour and try to enjoy the race. But I have this thing about short distances - they are way more difficult than longer ones and I'm always thinking about the finish instead of enjoying the journey. So according to my watch I finished in 1:02:20 but I think it's off because I think the course was long by a tenth of a mile. I bet my time is more like 1:04. The good news is that it gives me some encouragement and motivation for breaking an hour in the Turkey Trot.
Now I'm a little stiff and thirsty. So a hot shower and a cold drink are in order. Oh, and lest I forget, this race has kegs of cold beer at the finish line - how great is that!
